| "Eugene Onegin", Opera Holland Park, July 2005 |
|
Mark Stone's charismatic Onegin is an intriguing amalgam of his Don Giovanni
(Calixto Bieito's ENO production) and Silvio (Christopher Alden's I pagliacci
for Opera North). He does that damaged/sexy thing very well: conveying ennui,
arrogance, disconnection and self-contempt with insouciant confidence. Whether
patronising Tatyana or desperately attempting to turn back time in Act III, his
mobile baritone is highly persuasive.
Anna Picard, Independent on Sunday, 31 July 2005
Stone's Onegin is as handsome and haughty as Colin Firth's Darcy, which is as it should be.
Anthony Holden, The Observer, 24 July 2005
Mark Stone has the makings of a fine Onegin.
George Hall, The Guardian, 23 July 2005
[He] cuts every bit the dashing figure of the suave, pleasure-seeking townie
and has the vocal capacity to boot.
Edward Bhesania, The Stage, 10 August 2005
Baritone Mark Stone is impressive as Onegin… His voice is rich and rounded and
he injects his final scene with a harrowing note of gripping desperation.
Warwick Thompson, Metro, 25 July 2005
